New Home for my Scrapbooking

Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I posted anything (and I know I am seriously behind on my family updates!) but I wanted to let you know why. I've hinted that I have been developing a new web site where I can share my Scrapbooking projects, tips, tutorials and so much more. Well ... IT'S LIVE!!

Actually it's been live for a couple weeks but since no one was aware of it I was able to keep working on things on the DL!

I'd love for you to come and visit me at http://alisondaydesigns.com. I am planning some fun "Grand Opening" type freebies so be sure to sign up for my newsletter and add my new address to your Blog Feed so you won't miss out on anything!!

This is a very exciting step for me and has only been made possible because of my loyal followers. Hey, I'm talking to YOU!! :) Thank you so much! I hope you'll continue to pop by for visits at my new home!

LOAD213 - Day 6 Do It Now!

What page have you been putting off? Your wedding? Your child's 1st birthday? Your own birthday - maybe a big one like your 30th or 40th?
That was the prompt that Lain gave me for today's LOAD213 page.

At first I wasn't sure that I had been putting off any pages. I've been pretty good at scrapping current photos lately as well as digging into that pile of "memories to be scrapped". But ... there's always a 'but' isn't there? ... I have yet to start Christine's baby album so that's where this prompt led me.

And I came up with this.

My sister-in-law Christine threw me a surprise baby shower. What do you get a 3rd time Mom who knows she's expecting her 3rd girl and therefore already has everything? Frozen meals!! I'm telling you, this was THE BEST gift anyone could have given me!!

I have used these papers in Marley and Paige's baby albums so am keeping consistent and using them on Christine's album too. Here are some detail shots.

Found some old Dear Lizzy chipboard stickers in my stash that were perfect for this soft colour palette.

Like the colour of an embellishment but the wording is wrong? No sweat! Just change it!!

Added this one to show you how some of the elements have been attached with pop dots.

Thanks for stopping by. If you're participating in LOAD213 then I'll see you on the message boards!

Today's The Day! S.W.A.T. Grand Opening!!

Welcome to the official launching of S.W.A.T Scrap Warriors Advanced Training! We are so excited to get going with our drills and basic training. Just to recap, we will have 2 Drills (challenges) per month. With each drill there will a prize that has been has donated by an amazing sponsor! Drills are issued on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month and you will have until the 25th of each month to add your project and a winner will be selected from both drills at the end of the month. If you participate in both challenges you double your chances of being a winner!

Just to whet your appetite, here's what you are playing for ...

Got your attention? Well then, without further ado, here is Challenge #1 - Its all about you - make a LO all about you and show the world who you are!

Here's mine.

I have been working on a SMASH Book/Art Journal documenting my final year of my 30's (...sigh...) and one of the lists I'd started several months ago was called "39 things I've Learned So Far". I was originally going to put it into my 365 to 40 SMASH Book but decided to turn it into a layout for this challenge instead.

To create the back ground I trimmed a piece of white card stock to 11" x 11" and then wrote out my entire list on it. I wasn't worried about covering anything up as it was my intention for this to be a back ground image. Everything else was just layered on top. I've been following along with the new Two Peas video series called Scrap Your Stash and the one that aired at the time of creating this layout challenged us to use Christmas papers and products on a non-Christmas layout. All the papers on this layout are Christmas ones! I've got some Dear Lizzy, Stampin' Up, MME and probably something else that I can't remember. Really fun to look at those papers for their colours, not their patterns or themes!!

Here are some detail shots.

My title - really using up all my letter stickers!!

Lots of layers of stickers and gems and brads really finish things off and make it fun!

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope to see you all participating over at SWAT! Oh, and if you're interested in my list (39 Things I've Learned So Far) please leave your email address in the comments section below and I'll email you a copy. I'm still hoping to turn it into a SMASH page ... stay tuned!!

Your Story Matters Blog Hop

I am SOOOO excited! Today I can make the official announcement that I have been published!!! Eeek!

Last summer several of us from ScrapHappy (an online social group started by Lain Ehmann for her devoted LOAD and True Scrap fans) got together to create a "cook book" of scrapping prompts. It was intended as a free downloadable ebook for new members to the ScrapHappy family, but Lain decided that it was so awesome (and we were so talented) that it should be made available to the masses.

Okay, I may be putting words in her mouth there a little bit! :)

Today is the day that this little bad boy goes live!!

To celebrate, some of the contributors are hosting a Blog Hop. If you've been following along then you arrived here from Monica Bradford's site. If you stumbled across this because you're a regular reader of mine and you want to start at the beginning please go to Lain's Layout A Day site. (If you are looking for the Mini Album project for Practical Scrappers - go here.

This book was prompted by Lain's recent loss of her Mother after a battle with dementia  She realized, as she watched her Mother forget her own stories, that she wanted to help others capture theirs now. Before they faded or were lost to the sands of time. I think we often take for granted that we have tons of time to learn and hear about how Mom met Dad, or why they live where they do, or what Mom's average day looked like. As someone who lost their own parents at a young age I can relate to the need to capture the stories now. It is my main driving force as to why I have embraced this hobby so whole heartedly. I have half remembered stories from my childhood, a box of slides, a few precious letters and lots of blanks. The blanks will probably always remain blank and that makes me sad. I don't want to leave any blanks for MY children! I plan on living a very long time and retaining my memory until the day I die (that's not too much to ask, is it?) but just in case, I want to leave a legacy of stories for my children and grandchildren to enjoy. The pretty paper and embellishments is purely a happy byproduct!!

Anyway, those of us who wanted to help Lain by documenting some of our memories were assigned different topics. My first layout talks about why Moulin Rouge is my favourite movie.  (And not just because it stars Ewan McGregor  ... singing!) This layout is not the most embellished of all my layouts but it tells the story of my husband and my first date. Dinner and a movie seemed innocent enough at the time but before I knew it I was in love and planning a wedding. The picture was taken on our honeymoon in Paris at ... of course ... the Moulin Rouge!

Lots of layers, lots of red and I had fun created the windmill vanes out of scraps plus some doodling.

My second layout was about what I wished I'd learned at 18. Oh, there were a lot of things I could have talked about for that one!! The one I chose was that I wished I could have told 18 year old me that I truly love to run. Injuries suffered when I was 14 have now led to arthritis in my knees (left one in particular) that put the kybosh on my running career after the birth of Christine. Funny how you don't quite realize how much you love to do something (even though it's hard and you think it sucks when you're in the middle of long training run!) until you can't do it any more.

The large painted butterfly hides more journaling which talks about my weight/fitness struggles since finding out about the arthritis.

So what do you think? Want to see more?

The book is available for purchase at the incredibly low introductory price of $7.00 US from Lain's site. Please click on the photo at the top of this post to be taken right there. It is an electronic download so you can instantly see all the wonderful layouts and stories inside.

But WAIT ...

Would you like a discount?
Okay. Just for you!
Use the coupon code HOP and receive $2 off. This coupon is good until midnight on 1/21/13.

AND we will be giving away THREE copies of the book from comments made on ALL blogs (in other words, we will select three winners across all blogs). Please leave a comment about what story you feel is critical for every scrapbooker to document. Contest will close 1/19 and winners will be announced on the Layoutaday blog (http://www.layoutaday.com) on Monday, January 21. Prizes must be claimed by Wednesday, January 23. If you purchase a copy (taking advantage of the limited time coupon code of course!) and then win a copy, you will be fully reimbursed so you've nothing to lose!

Now hop on and enjoy what Paivi has to say. If you get lost along the way, here is the order of participants.

Paivi Eerola: www.peonyandparakeet.com
Danielle Taylor: http://scrapperonthestreet.com

One last thing. I just wanted to say a big thank you to Lain for believing in us, her "little people", for pushing us and for promoting us. Yes, you will see some "bigger" names as you go through this hop, but you'll also see average scrapbookers like myself who are really just doing this for fun. We're not professional (although we may dream of one day calling ourselves "professional scrapbookers") but having our little pieces of life and art out there for the general public to see and critique is so unbelievably awesome. So, thank you Lain! You rock!!

Am I Crazy? and Other Year End Musings

It is hard to believe that is it the last day of the year today. I've been frantically trying to finish up a major project that I am SUPER excited about but can't share with you just yet. Teaser: stick around until February!! I've also been reading a lot of year end posts. Favourites round ups. Resolutions. New One Little Words. It's all got me thinkin' ...

For the past few weeks I have had this crazy idea rattling around in my head. Really crazy!

What if I tried to go for the whole year without buying a single (non-essential) scrapbooking supply?

Gasp!

What do you think? Want to join me?

Here's my reasoning: 1) Money is extremely tight for me right now. I was left a handsome inheritance that ALL came to me as soon as I turned 19 (our age of majority here in BC). I used that money to live comfortably, buy a car, go to University, move to Scotland to "discover myself", travel and generally have a fabulous 20's experience. Then once I was married (oh yeah, we had an awesome wedding!) Greg and I used it to buy a townhouse, buy a new family friendly car, stay at home with my girls, buy a new, bigger house, buy a minivan, buy a new roof for the new house and all the while staying at home with the girls. The market crash of 2008 was pretty devastating for me too. The long and the short of it is that I am now back at work because we need that second income now. So .... I need to cut my personal spending and since scrapbooking supplies are quite expensive, and since I have a lot of them, this seems like a great place to start my new budget conscious life. 2) As I mentioned, I have a LOT of supplies! So, like money in the bank, I'm going to "spend" them instead of adding to them. Okay, that analogy doesn't totally make sense but I think you get my gist! 3) I'm curious to see if how long I can go without buying new pretty paper! Simple as that. I know it's a weakness and I think in order to quit my paper addiction I need to go cold turkey for a while.

Quick, someone start a PPA near me!! (Patterned Paper Anonymous!!)

Still think I'm crazy? Want to join me yet?

In preparation, I am doing an inventory of sorts. I've sorted my card stock by colour and am in the process of counting it. Next is my patterned paper. That could take a week! Good thing I don't have any shifts until Saturday!! I have typically kept most of my patterned paper in my paper racks but there have been stashes of random papers in drawers here and there so my goal is to get it ALL on the paper racks. I'm also amalgamating my Stampin' Up papers with my regular papers. I've made the decision to give up my Stampin' Up Demonstrator-ship as it really wasn't a good fit for me. (I have other reasons too which I'll talk about in a bit.)

Last but not least on my preparation list is to sort out and reorganize my crafting room. It's no longer really working for me so it's time to re-jig it. I also made the purchase of a Silhouette Cameo during all the Black Friday sales so need to make room for it in here. That's actually another reason I think I can get away with this crazy scheme. With my Cameo I should be able to cut any title or embellishment I need rather than buying pack of Thickers and ending up with a drawer full of half used packs!

Now that I've shared the crazy, let me share my musings.

My OLW (One Little Word) for 2012 was FOCUS. It turned out to be a great word for me. Towards the end of 2011 I was feeling pulled in several directions and wanted a word that would pull me back. Back into focus so to speak. I had intended on picking an area which I felt could use some attention and focusing on it for a month at a time. What ended up happening was that I started focusing on my scrapbooking and really started seeing results. I haven't counted exactly how many layouts I did this year but I'd hazard a guess at close to 200. Seeing as my goal was 144 (for my Twelve class at BPC) I think I can call that a win! I was also successful at getting onto two different Design Teams. The first was with Practical Scrappers and the second with Let's Get Sketchy. I am pleased to say I will be continuing with both in 2013!

I was also published! My ScrapHappy group got together and published an e-book called Your Story Matters - 25 Memories to Capture Now. Right now it is only being offered to new ScrapHappy members but in mid-January it is going to be for sale to the general public. I am SO excited! I contributed 2 layouts to it and it was a ton of fun to do. I will keep you apprised of when it goes on sale so you can be sure to snatch up a copy for yourself!! :)

To say that FOCUS was a good word for me in 2012 is quite the understatement! SO ... the question is, what to choose for a new word to guide me in 2013. I have really struggled to find a word. I've toyed with words like "fun", and "family" and "lighten" but nothing is ringing true to me. Until today that is. It came to me out of the blue. My word should be REFOCUS. Focus worked so well I was loathe to give it up but at the same time I did feel I needed a change. Choosing the word Refocus may seem like a cop out but that is truly how I have been feeling lately. 2012 was good to me personally and professionally (I went out to get a job and ended up with 2!!) and now I need to refocus my energies for a new year of challenges and experiences.  As part of my resolution not to spend money on non-essential scrapbook supplies, I will also not be spending money on classes this year. So I will not be joining in Ali's OLW journey through BPC or Cathy's Move More Eat Well 2.0 or even Shimelle's classes (sob!) but I will be continuing these journey's in my own way. Seeing as I really didn't participate in the MMEW class last year all the material in new to me so I may just work through it "for the first time" on my own!

As I wrap this up, I wanted to say thank you for sticking with me on this journey of mine. I appreciate every single person who takes the time to read and comment on what I have to say or what I have created. My creative projects will continue to be posted here but I will be refocusing (LOL!) on my blog with the intent to include more family updates and more regular features. I intend to grow my blog this year as well as my presence in the creative world. I hope you will continue to follow me as I do this.

Have a safe and happy New Year's celebration and may 2013 bring you joy, love and success in your endeavors.

LOAD Day 28, a SMASH update and a GIVEAWAY

Hi everyone. Hope you're all enjoying your Sunday. We are experiencing a rare sunny Sunday today!! The girls are super thrilled to NOT have to play soccer in the rain ... finally!! While various girls and Greg have been out of the house, I've been working on today's LOAD layout. It's not my typical layout. It is in fact another page in my 365 Days to 40 SMASH book! Remember this?

I first posted about it here and here. In the post in the second link I mentioned a GIVEAWAY ... I got a whole 2 responses so I am extending it for ONE MORE WEEK! If you would like to be entered to win a supply from my stash which will include 39 pieces of patterned paper, 39 assorted stickers and 39 pieces of ribbon (plus whatever else my little heart desires to add!) please do the following by midnight Pacific on Sunday November 4th:
1 - Become a follower of my blog - if you already are just leave me a comment to tell me so.
2 - Read the two linked posts and tell me which layout from the first (the one at Practical Scrappers) is your favourite in the comments of this post.
If you are one of the two ladies who have already entered to win this giveaway, you may enter again if you like or just know that your entries are assured! Also, if you would be so kind as to email me your mailing address (alisonday at eastlink dot ca) I have a little thank you gift I'd like to send your way!!

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled (Ha! that's a good one!!) programming ...

Today's LOAD prompt was to use a mask. Either on your layout with mists etc or to talk about the many masks we wear. I decided to pull back the mask so to speak. Yesterday I did a layout with lots of misting and doodling for which I used a mask (see it here) so didn't want to repeat myself today. Thinking of the masks we wear made me remember one of the lists I'd started for my 365 to 40 project. It's a list of 39 things I like about myself right now. Surprisingly hard to come up with 39! Really scraped the bottom of the barrel with some of them!!

When I flipped the page over I saw that it was already printed with the giant FABULOUS so rather than cover that up I used it as part of my design. I am pretty fabulous after all!! :)

Here's my title. I even used a rub on. A RUB ON people!!! I usually run screaming in the opposite direction from rub ons but not today! I must be evolving!! (Gosh, I hope so! It's about time!!)

I added the doodling to the letters. Totally fun!

I was trying to get a close up of all the different textures on my page ... not sure it was successful. I have mists - both Glimmer mists and  Mister Huey's, Gel medium and paint on there plus the word strips were glued down with Modge Podge.

Well, that's it. I really hope you like this as I am kind of a little bit in love with Art Journalling now! Sheesh! More things to add to my stash. Thankfully I now work at a place that sells all these supplies!! Don't forget to enter my giveaway. If you have done any art journalling of you own please leave me a link in the comments. I would LOVE to come and see your work!

It's Let's Get Sketchy Reveal Day!

We've got another awesome sketch for you guys over at the Let's Get Sketchy blog today. Here it is - Challenge #31.

Before I show you my layout I thought I'd share a little of my thought process with you.
When I saw this sketch I was taken by it's playfulness so I went hunting through my pictures for a fun photo to use. Back in the old days (LOL!) when we used (gasp) film I used to take it to a particular developer who offered one free enlargement per roll of film you brought in. So in my "pile o' pictures to be scrapped or otherwise dealt with" there was this one ....

I think it fits the "fun factor" bill, don't you! This was from my wild and crazy University days - some Fraternity party or other. I had to search to find me in the picture! I'm in the centre, looking down at "John Travolta", wearing gold lamé and sporting pigtails.
Once I had my picture of choice it was pretty easy to pick out some fun, loud colours and prints for my papers and embellishments. I used some Mister Huey's mist on the background card stock (Piglet) but it sort of disappeared against the lime green so I got creative and got out my paints. As I was going for a fun vibe I used old packaging to give the paint a lot of texture.

Here's a close up of that texture.

My friend Roxy recently posted a layout where she had to MacGyver some letters together from what she had left in the pack. I pretty much did the same here. I was short an 's' and an 'e' from the glittery black letters so I took them from a set of glittery white ones and sprayed them with Mister Huey's Warm Calico. they are not a perfect match but it's close enough!! I anchored my picture and all the banners with two different washi tapes, some black ric-rac, a flower embellishment and a chip board tag.

I felt a disco party picture needed a whole lot of bling so I dug out this from my stash and attempted to put it on straight. For those of you who use these flourishy bling embellishments regularly, I'd LOVE some tips on how to apply them properly!!

Last but not least I added this little cluster to hold a bit more info about the party. I would normally put the date here but I have no idea when this party was (or where even!) so ... this will have to do!

Thanks for stopping by today. Hope you have a chance to check out all the lovely layouts over on the Let's Get Sketchy site! We have changed the rules for entering your layouts. Click here for all the details. The biggest change is that starting today the upload links will be left open all month. You will need to complete 3 out of the 4 monthly sketches to be eligible for the monthly prize but you have all month to do the sketches.
Have a great week everyone!!

Happy Birthday to ME!!

Well, the day has arrived. My 39th birthday.

Ugh.

Actually, it's not that bad so far. Last night Greg took me out to see the Whitecaps battle the Seattle Sounders (no score despite several good chances on both sides including a nail bitingly close one in the dying seconds from the Whitecaps!) We got to see a real life celebrity (Drew Carey) and then went into Yaletown for dinner. All in all a fun evening. Today it was early morning soccer game (which the birthday girl begged out of), lunch out courtesy of Grandma and Grandpa Day and then Marley's opening day of Basketball (at the same time as Paige's soccer game). Tonight we are going out for sushi. Pretty low key day but I'm okay with that!

Here are some pictures from yesterday ...
I've never attended a soccer game at the newly renovated BC Place so this was all pretty exciting for me. This is the Pre-Game festival - booths, games, food, drumming group ... you name it!

The roof was open!! Looks SO much better than that ratty old dome!

Wouldn't you know, our seats were directly in front of the NBC Sports broadcast booth! This is what sportscasters do before air time - check their Twitter feeds!!

I've always enjoyed the Canucks pre-game hype up show but the Whitecaps one beat it BIG TIME!!

Biggest. Flag, Ever!

Just in case you forgot who to root for!!

Fireworks too.

Proof of life! LOL!

Our half time entertainment came in the form of one Mr Drew Carey! Yup. Mr Price is Right himself. In the flesh and at the broadcast booth at my feet. Our section gave him a bit of a hard time but he took it all in stride. There were a lot of calls of "Buzz Beer", "The price is wrong" and "I bid a dollar". The one fan (a Whitecaps fan) who asked for a picture with him got boos and jeers of "traitor!" (he's one of the owners of the Seattle Sounders) but it really was all in good fun. We're Canadian after all. We're too polite to be intentionally mean!

Getting Drew settled at the booth.

The broadcasters had a hard time ignoring the crowd and Drew did his entire interview with a huge grin on his face!

Night has fallen. The dome looked pretty cool with the starry sky behind. It was cold though! Note to self: bring a blanket next time.

This is Jay DeMerit - the Whitecaps captain who came to talk to NBC after the game. Super cute. Super buff. And from all accounts, super nice too! Had to take a stalker pic.

Well, that was our little date night last night. Might get another one next season!!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone. For my scrapper pals (if any of you made it all the way through this NON scrappy post) don't forget to check out my post on Practical Scrappers and this companion post with giveaway! Tell your friends. I will add to the pot as the comment total rises!!

A Practical Scrappers Feature Post - Are you Scrapping Yourself?

Hi there! I have a feature over on the Practical Scrappers blog today and I'm asking the question "Are you Scrapping Yourself?" I'd love for you to head over there and check out what this ...

and this ...

have to do with my answer.

If you'd like to come back and tell me which of my ME layouts was your favourite and become a follower, I will pick a random winner to send a little surprise. Not sure what it's going to be yet. Maybe 39 punched butterflies!! LOL! Just kidding, I've got quite the stash to pull from so it'll be good, I promise!!

Practical Scrappers Feature on Grandparents

WARNING: THIS POST MAY CAUSE YOU TO NEED A TISSUE!

Don't say I didn't warn you!! :)

This is also my second post today - for my Let's Get Sketchy post please scroll down.

Okay, now that the business part of this post is out of the way, let's get on to the fun part. Today on Practical Scrappers we are featuring layouts and cards about Grandparents. My children are very fortunate to have 2 sets of loving, available and invested grandparents - Grandma and Grandpa Day (babysit when we need them, run "Granny Camp" for a week in the summer, shower gifts for no reason other than the fact that they can) and Ammee and Poppa (a.k.a. Grandma and Grandpa Graham - babysitting providers, scooter fixers, chaos instigators {there are 14 grandkids on that side} and all around fun people to be around). I could have done any number of layouts celebrating my kids relationship with either set of these wonderful people. But I chose to talk about the Grandparents that left us before they were born. Grandma and Grandpa Campbell. MY parents.

I am using this Sketch Inspiration sketch (#335).

Clearly I deviated a bit!! :) I mostly used the sketch to place my background papers and then to help me know where to place my other items, but the number and orientation etc is different. But hey, that's what a sketch is for, right? Give you a general starting place for you to make your own!

Let's talk details now.

I've titled it "The Ones You'll Never Know". The large black letters started off as plain wood veneer but I felt I needed something dark up there so I sprayed them with my Warm Calico Mister Huey. The little hearts I've scattered around the layout were also from this pack of letters and I coloured them Mister Huey's also.

I created a pocket to hold my journalling and the order of service from their funeral. On top of the pocket I attached a couple of old passport photos I found in a box of papers I have (I hope to create albums for my brother and myself ... one day ...) The date is the date the photos were taken and I woke up this morning thinking it was confusing and maybe people would think that was the day they died so I have added the words "passport photos taken" above the date sticker on my layout.

Here are the items in the pocket. The journalling reads (get your tissues ready!):
"Grandma and Grandpa Campbell ... or Mum and Dad as I knew them. These are the grandparents my 3 beautiful, loving, fun, wonderful daughters will never know. They'll never know how Mum used to huck caramels at Campbell's Quiz winners. They'll never know that Dad used to fall asleep in the oddest places - like the bus home from work or the church pew (bent over his bible so people thought he was reading scripture!) They'll never hear my Dad read Arabian Nights or wait forever for him to get the "perfect picture". They'll never get to taste my Mum's cooking. So much lost. So much to tell them!"

The large picture is from their wedding and - before you freak out - is NOT an original. I took the original and scanned it before printing off the copy I used here.

Tucked down at the bottom and barely visible (on purpose) is this little tag.

Well, there you have it. This was truly a labour of love for me. The journalling is probably the most personal journalling I've ever written for a layout and I freely admit to shedding a few tears. Mum and Dad went to be with Our Lord on April 27th 1988 and not a day has gone by since then that I haven't missed them. My Graham parents are SO wonderful and I love them deeply but boy do I wish these two were still around! I know my Dad would LOVE the fact that Marley stays up way past her bedtime reading and can finish books like Alice in Wonderland in 2 days!! She's 8 by the way!! I know my Mum would have some deep wisdom about Paige and calm my heart about her future. And I know the two of them would love to laugh at Christine's antics - probably all the while telling me she is a chip off the old block and I was just as 'troublesome' when I was her age. One day I'm sure we'll get to do all that but for now I can only tell my girls as much as I remember in an attempt to keep them from being forgotten.

Thanks for coming on this journey with me today. Please be sure to check out all the other beautiful projects on the Practical Scrappers blog - no tissues required!
